Parents often turn to military schools when their child is having difficulty in the public school system. They choose military schools because of their strong discipline, rigid structure while satisfying the child's academic program. In cases where they are unable to get their child into this type of school, they may turn to alternatives school that provides similar services.

Parents may choose to send their child to a private school as an alternative to military school. These schools often have smaller class size, which helps the child who may need individualized attention learn better. Additionally, private schools may offer non-traditional teaching methods as a way to facilitate learning, and provide specialized curriculum activities.


Therapeutic boarding schools are another option use in place of a military school. They work well because they focus not only on educating the child, but providing individual and group therapy as way to help the child overcome their emotional or social problems. Sometimes these types of environment are exactly what the child needs to overcome his problems.


Therapeutic wilderness programs can be the alternative to military schools if the child has substance abuse issues. The programs at these facilities usually are short-term lasting up to one month. They do not provide the academic programs that you would find in a military school, but focuses on helping the child overcome their abuse problems and lack of respect for authority. Boot camp is also an alternative to military schools. The focus at a boot camp is to help the troubled child become more discipline and has most of the discipline rigor that you find in a military school. Thus, the program provides a strict schedule for activities such waking up early, studying, cleaning and working out, giving the child a host of activities on a daily basis. Kids in this type of program does not have the luxury of laying around the room playing their latest video game or watching television. For some troubled kids, this is the ideal environment for them to mature and learn to behave and not cause problems for their family and society as a whole.
