Best Way to Remove Adhesive From Auto Glass

Adhesive residue can be left on auto glass lots of different ways. Parking stickers, decorative decals, and even price stickers can all leave the unattractive gunk on your auto glass. At best, it's unattractive, and at worse, it can obscure your view. Fortunately, it's pretty easy to remove.

  1. First, clean the surface as well as you can with soap and water. In some cases, the soapy water is all you need to soften the adhesive gunk to the point that it can be easily rubbed off.

  2. Using a damp rag or stack of paper towels, rub the sticky parts briskly. If you can't loosen it enough with soap and a towel, move to the next step.

  3. If this isn't enough to efficiently remove the adhesive, it's time to try loosening it with a cleaning agent. Effective options are nail polish remover with acetone, ammonia, WD-40, and rubbing alcohol. If using ammonia, be careful not to get it on any plastic or rubber parts. It's also a good idea no to get acetone on any painted parts. It probably won't cause any problems, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

  4. After the cleaner has soaked in for a bit, try using the rag or paper towels to wipe it off. If it doesn't all come off in one round, but it is showing signs of coming off, repeat step 3 as necessary.

  5. If the adhesive isn't responding well to attempts to soften it, you will need to scrape the remainder off. Use an ice scraper or razor blade and pick the leftover residue off, being careful not to scratch the glass.
