One of the most important things you can do to kill roaches is to get rid of the reason they've set up shop in your home in the first place. Thoroughly clean your home, making sure you vacuum up any crumbs that might serve as a food source for the roaches.
Drop a few pieces of banana peel inside some glass jars and wrap masking tape around the outside of the jars. The masking tape gives the roaches traction so they can climb inside the glass jars to get to the banana. Once they're inside, however, they will not be able to climb out. Place the jars in areas where you've seen roaches. Once the roaches have been caught in the glass jars, seal them up and throw them out.
Mix shortening, sugar, flour and borax powder together to make a roach bait. If the mixture is dry, add a few drops of water. Spoon this mixture into a few empty, clean yogurt containers and place the containers on top of cupboards, behind appliances, beneath the sink and in the pantry. Make sure the areas where you put the containers are out of reach of children and pets. Leave the containers in place for six weeks and change the bait every few days.
Sprinkle diatomaceous earth along baseboards, inside cupboards and in other areas where cockroaches have been seen. This powder cuts roaches' exoskeletons and causes them to dehydrate, but it's safe to use around children and pets.

This insecticide kills cockroaches almost immediately when they make contact with it. In addition, it will kill any offspring when the cockroaches bring the pyrethrum back to the nest. Once you have sprayed the insecticide and killed the cockroaches, you'll want to sweep up any exoskeletons that are left, and also mop floors and wipe down other areas thoroughly.
