How to Clean Out Drains

Drains can become clogged over time due to food particles, debris and grease that build up in your pipes. Many small particles slip through the drain opening that then become lodged on the sides of the drainage pipe. If you have a clogged drain, do not worry; there are many easy ways to unclog you drain that will save you the money that hiring an expensive plumber could cost you.


  • Vinegar & baking soda - An all-natural solution to commercial drain opening products is the combination of vinegar and baking soda. These natural ingredients provide a chemical combustion when combined that is powerful enough to unclog a stubborn drain. Pour three-quarters of a cup of dry baking soda into you drain, and then immediately follow with two cups of vinegar. Clog your drain with a wet rag and allow it to sit for 30 minutes.



  • Cola - Almost any brand of cola will do for this al natural drain cleaning option. Pour a two liter of cola into you drain. Cover the drain with a wet dishrag to provide a seal between the rag and the affected drain. Cola contains phosphoric acid that is strong enough to eat through many stubborn blockages. If this does not work the first time, repeat as necessary.



  • Snake auger - A snake auger is often used after other remedies have been tried to no avail. You can purchase or rent one from your local home improvement store. Place the flexible metal rod into your blocked drain and feed through until the rod meets the blockage in your drain. Turn the crank in a clockwise position to apply pressure to the blockage. Retrieve it back and dispose of the gunk. 



  • Commercial drain cleaners - There are many brands of commercial drain cleaners on the market for your plumbing problems. One of the more popular choices of commercial drain cleaners is Drano; however, there are many other brands on the market. You can purchase one at your local home improvement or general merchandise retailer.
