How to Design a Gray Living Room

A monochromatic decorating scheme incorporates various shades of the same color and is very modern, sophisticated and elegant.  The rooms are very calming and make a great living room setting because they tend to be a formal room in the house.  A gray living room design has a classy look and fits nicely in a contemporary home.  You can work with multiple grays and create a stunning appeal.

Things you will need to design a gray living room include:

  • Paint color swatches

  • Paint brushes

  • Paint rollers

  • Interior paint colors that come in light, medium, and dark gray

  • Dark gray furniture

  • Silver-toned large mirror

  • Medium gray window treatment

  • Big area rug

  • Textured throws and pillows

  • Various lamps in gray colors and silver tones

  1. Pick your colors.  To start the project, choose a paint strip with different shades and values.  Use the top three values as the color palette for the living room.  This will provide dark, medium, and light shades of gray.

  2. Paint the walls.  Be sure to use a water-based interior paint and select the lightest shade to paint the walls.  This will be the backdrop for the room and is the starting block of the design.

  3. Add furniture, which should be a dark gray, to the room.  The color should be the darkest gray on the paint strip.  Pick a couch in a solid or slightly patterned tone on tone print.  This will give you longevity with the couch.

  4. Select window treatments that are a medium shade of gray.  You can even add draperies or sheers in a medium shade of gray to the windows.  Window treatments look best when they are hung floor to ceiling.  This will give visual appeal.

  5. Put a silver-toned large mirror on a wall.  Silver and gray work well together, so this will produce a great look and keep in the color palette.  You will also have more light and reflectivity in the room.

  6. Add a large area rug.  In order to anchor the living room décor, the rug will lie under the chairs, couch, end tables, and coffee table.  This will bring all the different hues together in a pattern.

  7. Incorporate pillows and throw blankets.  This will bring attention to the monochromatic gray color scheme.

  8. Use silver tones on the lamps in the room.  The lighting in a room is an important element to a living room, particularly a monochromatic decor.
