How to Get Help for School Loans

How to get help for school loans is a necessity for any college student.  Consolidation, assistance with lowering payment during hardship or simply finding the right loan is vital to completing your education.  Where to go for the answers can be confusing and frustration.

  1. Talk to financial services at your local college.  Your financial aid or financial services at the college has all the ins and outs of the financial aid system.  They are there to help students with forms, contacts with the financial institution and to walk the student through the whole financial aid process.

  2. Call  your financial aid counselor at the bank or loan office. Lending institutions are there to help students in conjunction with the financial aid office.  They work as a team to help the student.  If you should have problems paying your student  loan, there are deferments, and payment arrangements that can be worked out.

  3. Contact your local State Department of Education.  When you are having a dispute or feel the college or financial aid institution is discriminating you against, the DOE in your local state is the next stop.  They can work out most grievances involving students not getting their full loan or problems with loan companies.

  4. Contact the US Department of Education. This is the top of the grievance  chain.  The Federal DOE is for matters that doesn't fall under the jurisdiction of the State level. They conduct investigations when students have been shorted on their loans or when lending agencies become too aggressive in their collection of delinquent loans.  ED.gov also explains the loan process and has tutorials about what is expected of the student and what the student can expect of the lending agency.
