How to Haggle with Used Car Dealers

Buying a used car can mean a big savings to you, especially if you know how to haggle with the dealer. The final sale price of a used car is never set in stone and there is always room for negotiation. A few tricks and tips can get you a long way in getting the vehicle price down to the price you are willing to pay.

- Research the make and model of the vehicle in which you are interested. Know the Kelley Blue Book value of the car and the prices similar models are selling for in your area.
- Keep a price in mind that you are comfortable paying for the automobile. Sometimes the excitement of a new car may make you mistakenly agree to a price which you didn't intend to pay.
- Remain calm during the haggling process. You cannot be so desperate to get the car or be in too much of a hurry to go through the offering process.

- Point out any flaws or problems with the car to help make a case for a lower price. Don't be afraid to point out other cars in the area that may be selling for a lesser price. Be friendly during the process so as not to insult the dealer.
- Offer a price to the dealer that you are willing to pay and then wait patiently for their response. Walk away if they are not willing to meet your price, but leave your number in case they change their mind. Once they realize you mean business, they are often more accommodating with you.
