How to Install a Stone Driveway

Many people are opting to have their old asphalt driveways replaced with a stone driveway. Although most people hire a professional to do the job for them, it is something that you can do yourself. It may take a little longer to complete, but it can definitely be done. Bluestone and Travertine are two popular stones that are used in driveways.

How to Install a Stone Driveway

  1. Take the measurements of the driveway.

  2. Choose and order the stone. Order some extra stones just in case some of the stones are broken or cracked.

  3. Dig up the area where the driveway is to be laid. There should be approximately a 6 to 8 inch trench. Make sure that the trench is level.

  4. The trench should be filled with approximately 5" of gravel, which is referred to as the base of the driveway.

  5. On top of the gravel, add 2" of course sand.

  6. Use a rake to level the sand. It is very important that the sand be compacted. If you do not have a compactor, most home improvement stores, such as Home Depot, rents them.

  7. Install a pole on each end of the driveway, and attach a piece of string to each pole. Use this as your guide to create the border of the driveway.

  8. Lay the stones for the border, and apply an adhesive to attach them.

  9. Lay the remainder of the stones to cover the driveway. After all of the stones are in place, roll over each stone with the compactor.

  10. Use a blower to remove all of the debris between the stones.

  11. Apply grout between each stone. Use a squeegee to remove any excess grout.
