How to Install a Tin Roof

Installing a tin roof is affordable and considered easy to do yourself. However, the tin damages easily and can split making it potentially dangerous to handle. Using a roofing contractor can assist with the shaping and carrying of the tin to prevent potential hazards.

How to Install a Tin Roof :

  1. Measure the roof's length and height on each side. Add 2 - 4 inches to the height measurements for overhang.

  2. Get the measured amount of tin from a roofing supply company.

  3. It would be a good idea to remove the old shingles before installing the tin. Another option would be covering the existing shingles with tar paper.

  4. Place tin sheets length-wise on the roof at 2 ft intervals. Secure the sheets with three inch screws.

  5. Nail down the edging with a hammer and roofing nails 1 and 1/4 inches.

  6. Continue working across until the roof is covered with tin sheets. Put a nail about every 6 inches along the length of the roof and at the end of the gable and gutters.

  7. Roofing cement added to the seams protects the roof from damage caused by moisture, insects and animals.

  8. Wear gloves when handling tin to avoid accidental cuts.
