How to Install Asphalt Roof Shingles
Asphalt roof shingles provide an efficient yet affordable solution for covering a roof. These shingles do require replacement more often than some roofing materials. But the overall cost is considerably cheaper than other roof coverings. You could save even more money by performing this installation yourself.
How to Install Asphalt Roof Shingles:
Step 1: Obtain measurements for your roof. Measure the length and width of the roof. Add 10 percent to each measurement then divide by 100. This is the square feet of your roof.
Step 2: Purchase roofing felt and waterproof membrane using the measurements in Step 1. Purchase 2 1/2 pounds of roofing nails.
Step 3: Remove your old shingles. Replace any rotten plywood you discover.
Step 4: Begin at the lower left-hand corner of the roof. Remove tabs from the shingles. Press them in place and secure them with roofing nails.
Step 5: Cut off the shingles six inches from the length of the first shingle and butt them in rows along the lowest edge of your roof. Press the shingles into place and secure them with roofing nails. Leave a 1/2 inch overlap.
Step 6: Begin laying additional rows cutting off the shingles and laying them in place as you did in Step 5. Secure each shingle with roofing nails. Continue until you have installed all of the shingles.
