How to Install Gutters

Gutters add a nice touch to a home while keeping water out of your home. If they are installed correctly, they can catch water and channel it away from the home. When they are not install properly they can cause a buildup of water, which create a musty smell and mold. This article will teach you how to install gutters.

How to Install Gutters

  1. Think about how you would like the gutters to direct the water away from your home.

  2. Take measurements along the edges of the roof. This will help you determine how many gutter parts you will need to purchase. Add another 10 percent to the measurements for additional parts.

  3. Combine the measurements of the roof to the measurements in the gutter layout plan. This will help you determine any other components you will need for the end pieces, elbows, corners and drop outlets. You will also need to purchase mounting brackets to use for every 24 to 30 inches of the gutter parts.

  4. Measure a 1/2 inch from edge of the roof and put a mark there. Make a mark 1/2 inch from the roof's edge near the downspout end. Use a level to make sure the marks are level.

  5. Calculate the slope for the water flow. The gutters should slope 5/8 inch for every 10 feet. Measure that distance towards the first mark on the downspout.

  6. Create a chalk like from the bottom mark on the downspout end to the mark on the far end. You can refer to this line when installing the gutters

  7. Install the gutter parts, which includes the drop outlets and corners. Use a power drill to screw on the mounting brackets.

  8. Continue installing each section of the gutter components, connectors and brackets.

  9. Cut any section with a hacksaw to ensure they fit.

  10. Run silicone caulk between all sections to prevent water leaks.

  11. Attach the downspout to the house with mounting brackets.
