How to Install Slate Roof Tiles
Slate roofs on any home or office building are exceptionally beautiful and durable. Although slightly more expensive than other roofs, slate roofs last much longer and provide protection to the building. Here is how to install slate roof tiles on a building.
Make sure the roof has been constructed properly. If there are any construction problems, they should be repaired before installing slate roof tiles.
Measure the building to determine how many slate roof tiles you will need to purchase.
Purchase the slate roof tiles that fit your needs. Remember that color and size are not the only factors you should consider. Tiles have specific thickness, durability and styles.
Purchase the tools needed to install a slate roof tile. These tools include a slate cutter, slate hammer and slate ripper.
Place two layers of underlayment on the roof. This underlayment will help prevent any leaks. If you are concerned about leaks, you may want to put a layer of underlayment cement between the two layers.
Create a level line to set up the first row of tiles. You want to make sure this row is level as it will set up the rest of the roof.
Chalk each line of tiles before placing the row of tiles on the roof.
Use copper or stainless steel roofing nails to secure the tiles to the roof.
Do not walk on the slates that you have installed. You could loosen or crack the tiles.
Keep several tiles in storage. You may have some tiles break or crack over time. You can always replace the tiles as needed.
