How To Lease a Car

While leasing is not for everyone, there are some definite benefits to it.  You are able to drive a car that is relatively new, which in turn will reduce your maintenance cost and in many cases you are able to lease a car that you may not be able to afford to purchase outright.  Here are a few simple steps to guide you if you are considering leasing a car.

  1. Decide which car you want to lease - Most major brands of vehicles offer some type of lease option.  You should explore the vehicles that interest you.  If you are undecided between a couple of different vehicles then go and test drive them all.

  2. Research the depreciation cost of the vehicle - You can find this information online and it will be an important factor in determining the total cost of your lease.

  3. Research the cost of leasing the vehicle - Go over the terms of the lease with a salesperson.  Look for hidden cost and have a clear understanding of what will and will not be covered by your monthly payment.  Some companies provide all general maintenance while others expect you to pay it out of your pocket.  Know how much it will cost you to terminate the lease in case something happens.

  4. Understand your liability - Understand the differences between what will happen in the case of an accident if you are leasing the car and what will happen if you were buying the same car.  Depending on the lease there can be a difference.

  5. Compare your total costs - Compare the total cost of you leasing to the total cost of you purchasing the vehicle and making payments.  Decide if the leasing option is for you.

  6. Get insurance - If you decide to proceed, call your insurance company and give them the information on the vehicle.  Most companies will require your insurance information prior to releasing the vehicle.

  7. Review, sign and pay the upfront cost - Review and sign your lease and pay whatever upfront cost you are responsible for.
