How to Measure a Roof

If you want to replace your roof, measuring the roof is essential. It may seem like an intimidating task to someone who has not done it before. All you need is patience and an eye for shapes. The process should take only 15 minutes to complete. This article will teach you how to measure a roof.

How to Measure a Roof

  1. Place a ladder along the edge of the house so you can reach the roof.

  2. Draw a sketch of the roof on paper. Keep track of the measurements as you take measurements. Make sure you include eaves, gables, valleys and ridges.

  3. Divide the roof into sections to make the measuring and calculations easy. Use rectangles, squares, triangles and other shapes for the sections. Each shape will be added together to get the total area of the roof.

  4. Measure each roof section. Use the basic geometry calculations to determine the area of each shape. For example, you will measure the length and width of the two sides of a rectangle or square.

  5. Measure each section and record it. Try to break down each section into smaller sections to obtain accurate measurements.
