How to Start a Rehabilitation Program After Knee Surgery

After knee surgery, getting started on a rehabilitation program is essential to a full recovery. In years past, the knee was kept immobile immediately after surgery. Today, most doctors and physical therapist believe in starting rehabilitation on the day of the surgery. The rehabilitation process should actually begin before the surgery if possible.

  1. Prepare for some hard work. The recovery period and rehabilitation after knee surgery is not easy, and a proper frame of mind is important.

  2. Communicate with your doctor and therapist. Discuss any change or concern that you may have to be sure there has not been another injury to the knee.

  3. Start an exercise program prior to surgery if possible. Strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee aids the rehabilitation process after surgery.

  4. Begin a rehab program after surgery with assistance from your physician and therapist. Normally, you begin rehabilitation with light bending. Do this under supervision.

  5. Look over the list of exercises you got when you were released from the hospital. These will include bending and resistance exercises. Regaining mobility of the knee joint is essential. Early on, you will need a walking cane or crutches.

  6. Follow the orders of your doctor or therapist once you have returned home. Normally, you will do some light weight training within seven days. As your knee becomes stronger, you will add more weights and will be doing more exercises for mobility.

  7. Resume your normal activities after your health care providers monitor you and give you the go-ahead.
