How to Transfer Files From One Computer to Another

Sometimes you would like to have files on another computer. There are many ways to transfer files from one computer to another including emailing the files, connecting the computers together and saving the data on an external drive to transfer the files. Here is the easiest way to transfer files from one computer to another.

  1. Purchase an external drive or jump drive. Be sure to get a unit that is large enough to store the information you want to transfer to another computer. You can purchase one of these drives at your local computer supply store. To locate a reputable store near you, search the communities of MerchantCircle.

  2. Connect the drive to your PC through the provided cord or insert the jump drive into the USB port.

  3. Right click on the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of your computer screen.

  4. Click on Explore.

  5. The window will show you all of your files saved on your PC.

  6. Choose the files you want to transfer. You can do this by clicking on the first file and holding down the SHIFT key. Click on the final file to highlight all the files. If you only want certain files, hold down the CTRL key as you click on the files you want to back up.

  7. Right click on the highlighted files.

  8. Click on Copy.

  9. Look for the external or jump drive from the column of drives on the left hand side of your screen. Double click on this drive.

  10. In the open space on the right side of the screen, right click anywhere on the screen.

  11. Choose Paste.

  12. The files will then be placed on the external or jump drive. This may take a few seconds, depending on the number of files you are pasting.

  13. Connect the external or jump drive to the other computer you want to save your files on by putting the jump drive in the USB slot or connecting the external drive to the PC.

  14. Right click on the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of your computer screen.

  15. Click on Explore.

  16. Look for the new drive or file you wish to store this date. You can find the drive or file in the column of drives on the left hand side of your screen. Double click on this drive.

  17. In the open space on the right side of the screen, right click anywhere on the screen.

  18. Choose Paste.

  19. The files will then be placed on the new computer, in the drive or file you selected. This may take a few seconds, depending on the number of files you are pasting. Now, you have the needed files on both computers.

  20. If you no longer want those files on the old computer, simply delete them from the computer.
