How To Update a Garmin GPS System

Garmin is a leading manufacturer of the personal GPS, or global positioning system. Use your GPS in your car, on a hiking trail, in the air or on the ocean, as it displays step-by-step directions for any destination. Garmin releases firmware updates sporadically (up to four times a year), including bug fixes, map updates and interface changes, so make sure to get your free updates regularly.

  1. Charge your GPS unit before attempting to update.

  2. Download Garmin's WebUpdater software to your computer. Select your specific Garmin device and follow the on-screen installation instructions to complete the software installation. Only install the software one time.

  3. Plug a USB cable between your Garmin GPS and computer; one end plugs into the GPS, while the other end into a USB port on your computer.

  4. Find the Garmin software on your computer; it is usually located under "Programs," "Garmin," "WebUpdater."

  5. Double-click to activate the software. The software checks for any map and/or features updates.

  6. Follow the directions and allow time for the software to install the updates to your GPS system.

  7. Close your software after the updates are complete and it displays your updated firmware. Then, proceed with unplugging the USB cable from your GPS and computer.

Now your updated GPS has the most up-to-date software, maps, fixes, firmware and any software available for your model.
