Jobs in Telecommunications
Telecommunications is the delivery of television, telephone, Internet and other services to customers. Wired, wireless, and satellite are the three main sectors of telecommunications. Almost every business and household relies on telecommunications to get their information. The telecommunications industry relies on various jobs. Each job will require a certain skill set to perform at a high level.
- Installation Technicians- these jobs require people to install and repair telecommunications systems. Jobs are broken down into specific duties. Some people work outdoors digging holes to install telephone poles and bury lines underground.
- Line Installers. Other jobs require the installation of equipment indoors like homes or businesses.
- Cable Installers- These are the people who install satellite or cable television service. They are also responsible for explaining to customers how to operate their equipment properly. Cable installers must know their products very well.
- Sales Representatives- every telecommunications company will have people who are responsible for finding new clients. Sometimes these positions are also known as telemarketers. Most sales representatives contact potential customers via telephone.
- IT Professionals – are responsible for troubleshooting all issues that arise with the networks, computers and digital lines.
The types of hours and pay vary for each job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average weekly earnings of a telecommunications worker were $1,038 in 2008.
Some jobs have a high turnover rate, like customer service representatives. This means that new jobs become available. Sometimes you have to take an entry-level job to move up within the industry.
