Steps to Change an Oil Filter
An oil filter is used to remove contaminants that are present in engine oil, transmission oil, lubricating oil, or hydraulic oil. The filters must be changed before they affect the performance and life span of the engine. Follow a few steps to change an oil filter to keep your car performing well.
Steps To Changing An Oil Filter
Wear latex or working gloves. You will need a wrench to remove the filter.
Wipe off the filter with a rag to remove some of the oil.
Place a drain pan underneath the vehicle to catch the oil.
Apply the wrench to the air filter and turn hard.
Once the filter is loosened, you can remove it by hand.
Invert the filter into the catch pan to drain the oil.
Wipe off the filter mount.
Place fresh oil over the surface of the rubber gasket on the new oil filter.
Screw the filter on the post and run it up to the gasket plate.
Turn the filter an additional 3/4-inch to tighten it. Do not use a wrench to tighten the filter.
- Turn on the engine to check for leaks.
