Steps to Repairing a Power Window Motor

A faulty power window motor will prevent you from lowering your windows. In an emergency situation, this is quite dangerous, as it may trap you in the vehicle. In the event that the power window motor fails, you should replace it immediately. Like all automobile maintenance projects, you should disconnect the battery first.

Steps to Repairing a Power Window Motor:



Step 1: Tape the window glass into the closed position on the inside and outside of the window. Run tape across the bottom of the window glass without touching the door panel.



Step 2: Pry the door panel off using a screwdriver. Pry along the edges where the door panel fastens to the door. When the door panel is completely unfastened, simply remove it from the door frame. Remove the weather sheeting and place it in a safe location.



Step 3: Loosen the bolts connecting the regulator assembly to the door. Unscrew all screws holding the window glass to the regulator assembly. Remove the regulator assembly and its framework track completely.



Step 4: Disconnect the motor's electrical cable from the wiring. Remove the bolts connecting the motor drive to the rotating reel. Remove the power window motor by sliding it out. Install the new power window motor. Install the new motor's reel housing onto the rotating reel. Reconnect the bolts that connect the motor drive to the rotating reel. Reconnect the motor's electrical cable.



Step 5: Reconnect the framework and regulator assembly to the door frame. Reconnect the screws holding the window glass to the regulator assembly. Reinstall the the weather sheeting. Fastening the door panel back into the car. Remove the tape from your window glass.
