Types of Roll Bars for Autos

Drivers never anticipate rolling their vehicle while they are racing, but you must be prepared for the worst. As a safety measure, roll bars can be installed to ensure your protection. The guide provided will explain the most common types of roll bars available. The roll bars listed can be easily installed with only minor modifications.

Street Roll Bar

The street roll bar is the basic 4-point roll bar. In most cars, the rear seats and convertible tops can remain in place with no modifications. These types of roll bars are usually made out of 1.750 x .120 DOM mild steel tubes. With most installations, the main hoop attaches to seat belt towers, where there are two rearward braces, and no diagonals. In many cases, the finish is stainless steel; however, some drivers prefer the baked powder coating.

Street Sport Roll Bar

For the high performance race car driver, the street sport roll bar is a 4-point roll bar with an additional bolt-In (removable) horizontal harness. The Street-Sport roll bar bolts in with a 4-point mount and requires no welding. The roll bar allows you to continue to use your back seat when you remove the crossbar. These types of roll bars are usually made out of 1.750 x .120 DOM mild steel tubes as well. The optional finishes include stainless steel or powder coated.

Race Roll Bar

Designed for autocross and speed trials, this roll bar has a diagonal cross brace and most have a harness mount tube for additional security. This type of roll bar is a 4-point roll bar as well. Race roll bars are made with 1.750 x .120 DOM steel, however cars weighing more than 3500 lbs. will use 2" x 120 ERW steel. Race roll bars are also available with powder coated or stainless steel finish.
