How to Check Radiator Hoses
When a car starts to overheat it could be something as simple as a loose radiator hose, which is something that you can easily fix yourself with a little guidance. It should be one of the first things that you check before taking your car to a mechanic for repairs.
How to Check Radiator Hoses
- Raise the hood on the car, which should be done by pulling the release located on the inside of the car underneath the dash.
- Pull the hood release, which is located at the front edge of the hood. Use your hand to hold in the release lever while lifting the hood with your other hand.
- Locate the radiator hoses, which is the big black hoses attached to the radiator. There is one hose located at the top and one hose located at the bottom of the radiator.
- Use your hands to squeeze the hoses and if they feel brittle they should be replaced. Make sure the engine of the car is cool before doing this step to avoid being burned.
- Check to make sure the clamps at the ends of the hoses are not wet or damp. If they are wet, they should be tightened or replaced. Make sure that the clamps are tight, and you will know they are tight enough when they cannot be easily moved or turned by hand.
- Check the hoses for any frayed ends, cracks or tears. The hoses should be replaced if any of these defects are discovered.
- Close the hood to the car.
