How to Become a Computer Repair Center

If you have the technical skills to repair computers, opening a computer repair center may be the business opportunity for you. You will be able to work on your own schedule to repair desktops and laptops in people’s homes or in their business. There are many other services you can offer as well.


  1. Create a business plan for the computer repair center. The plan should include your long-term plans for the business as well as short term goals. Your business plan should also include startup costs, location and advertising. Think of everything you will need to create a successful business.

  2. Apply for a loan at a bank or credit union to get money for starting and running the business.

  3. Come up with a name for the center and register it with your state to get your business license. Every state has different requirements and you can find those out by visiting your local county clerk’s office for more information. You will have to fill out a form and pay a fee for the license.

  4. Apply for a tax identification number with the IRS. You can apply online or by mail. Applying online is the quickest way to receive the number

  5. Start a business bank account that will be solely for the business. You do not want to mix your personal and business accounts together.

  6. Talk to a real estate agent about finding a place for the repair center. Try to locate it around business parks where there are plenty of businesses that need computer help.

  7. Purchase all of the equipment you will need for the business. You will need things such as software utility programs, hardware tools and other computer hardware tools to do the repairs.

  8. Advertise the repair center with friends, family and neighbors. Put ads in the newspaper or consider posting online in a classified ads. Create flyers to give out to businesses as well as business cards. Offer discounts for the grand opening of the repair center.
