Types of Organic Pest Control Products
It isn’t always necessary to bring potentially dangerous pest control chemicals into your home. Rather than risk your health, or that of your family and pets, several types of natural, organic pest control products can safely and effectively rid your home and property of most common unwanted insects.
Insect Traps
A variety of nontoxic traps are available which contain various natural insect attractants, such as pheromones, in combination with a sticky tape or substance that efficiently captures crawling or flying pests.
Electronic Insect Repelling Devices
Avoiding the use of any insecticide in your home to fight pests may be possible by utilizing one of the many types of electronic pest repelling devices. The technology used today includes ultrasound, ionic, and electromagnetic systems. (It is important, of course, to seek out those units that are considered safe for family pets if you have them in your home.) Additionally, there are bug zappers that actually vaporize insects after being lured by the special lighting.
Rodents and other animal pests are also candidates for the use of similar electronic devices created to keep the creatures away from homes and properties.
Natural Desiccants for Pest Control
Powder products mined from the earth can be extremely effective at killing insects by harming their exoskeletons and causing dehydration. Diatomaceous earth (also called Diatomite) is simply the finely ground fossils of prehistoric fresh water organisms. Although considered entirely organic, it is necessary to avoid inhaling the fine powder; this applies to humans and pets alike.
Another common desiccant, boric acid powder, is also used as a natural pesticide. While boric acid is generally considered safe, precautions are necessary for use near infants and allergy-sensitive individuals.
Herbs as Insect Repellant
Common herbs such as bay leaves, basil, garlic and peppermint discourage insects from making their homes in pantries and other locations within homes. Use of these pungent herbs or essential oils derived from these herbs, are ideal for use near foods.
Commercially Prepared Natural Bug Sprays
A diverse array of insecticide, pesticide and repellant sprays considered organic and/or natural are widely available. These specially formulated, environmentally friendly products generally use specific combinations of essential oils, botanical preparations and other natural ingredients known to kill or repel insects.
Please note that not all commercially prepared products labeled “organic” are nontoxic. Read all labels and instructions carefully before use.
