How To Write Writing Samples for Employment

Many employers ask potential employees to submit a writing sample as part of the application process. A good quality writing sample can improve the possibility that you are asked to schedule an interview. Your writing sample is an excellent opportunity to put your best foot forward.

  1. Consider the audience and the job description for which you are applying. Consider also the type of writing sample that makes the most sense for that type of job. Do not submit a poem, for example, if you are applying for a position as a technical writer.

  2. Follow all directions given to you by your potential employer. If your writing sample is open to your own choice, choose carefully what your subject should be. If you have been given specific instructions or a starting point, follow those instructions carefully. Part of your evaluation will be following those directions as closely as possible.

  3. Proofread your writing sample carefully for both spelling and grammar errors. Your writing sample shows your writing style and communication skills, but it also shows your attention to detail, which is very important to a potential employer.

  4. Submit original work only. Plagiarism is not only illegal, but it is also grounds for non-employment or termination if you are hired. It also reflects badly on your character, and a potential employer will find it difficult to trust you if it is found that you plagiarized your writing sample. Employers have ways to determine if your work is original or copied, so it is not worth your time to even attempt to pass off another person's writing sample as your own.
