How to Find Small Businesses for Sale
If you are thinking about starting a small business, one thing that you may want to consider is buying an already established one, instead of starting one from scratch. Buying a business that is already up and running saves you a lot of work. The business generally comes with equipment and supplies you will need and you already have a customer base.
- Look on the Internet for sites that specialize in selling small businesses. You will be able to search small businesses advertised in your area. Franchises are also often listed on these sites.
- Craigslist is another site where a small business owner may advertise a business that is for sale. The ads are free to place on Craigslist, so you might try placing one on there yourself to get the word out that you are looking to buy a small business. An owner may see it and contact you.
- Read the classified section of your local paper each day. Many people place ads in this section of the newspaper. Look for the section dedicated to businesses for sale.
- Word of mouth, talk about your desire to own a business. Tell friends and family members that you want to purchase a business. You never know, someone you know may have knowledge of the perfect business for you.
- Take a ride in the business area of your city. Look for signs on doors or in windows that say “for sale.” Some businesses advertise their desire to sell this way, you might get lucky and find one that you would be interested in.
- Make an offer on a business you would like. If you know of a business that you would love to own, go in and speak to the owner, make an offer. You might get lucky and find an owner that has been considering retirement. Your offer could be the push he needs to follow through.
