How to Obtain a Retail Business License
Owning your own business is the dream of many Americans, due to the idea of being your own boss. Many people have opened retail businesses, where they can promote their own part of the American dream in a store of their own. There are a number of regulations for small businesses, including licensure.
Directions:
- Fill out the necessary paperwork. You will need to apply for your employer identification number (EIN) and decide on a business name, location, and other specifics when you prepare the paperwork. It is better to have the information available for the paperwork to expedite the process.
- Apply for the necessary licenses, according to your state's requirements. All states will require a license to collect and turn in sales taxes, but some states require additional business licenses. There is typically an application fee for some of these licensures, so be prepared for that.
- Depending on the type of business you will be running, you may need federal licenses as well (for instance, if you are selling alcohol or tobacco). Your state can give you guidance on this.
- Make sure that you have the city and county permits ready for your business. This will vary according to the town or county. There may be some areas that collect city taxes as well, so be aware of this possibility. A local business license may be required in some areas, or a health permit (particularly if food is being served).
- Go in person and apply for the retail license, making sure that all of the forms have been turned in. There will be a fee of some kind associated with this application.
