Engineering is a broad field of study and has many sub disciplines. It a field that requires extreme social, analytical and mathematical abilities. There are thousands of schools across the country and abroad that have great engineering programs. Many of the top engineering graduate programs are located in the United States.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The MIT School of Engineering consistently ranks at the top of the nation's leading engineering programs. Almost half of the school's graduate population (45 percent) is enrolled in the engineering program. Students have over 15 fields of study that they can pursue such as: chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering, and the MIT campus boasts 20 different research centers. Also, MIT offers a joint program with Harvard University that provides master's and doctoral degrees in other fields of engineering.

Stanford University

Stanford University's School of Engineering offers programs in computer science, electrical engineering and aeronautics, as well as several other fields of study. The campus features 65 different labs and research centers, where students can get involved in projects. Because of its proximity to Silicon Valley, many students receive internships at companies located in the area. Graduate programs are offered in 10 areas and 20 percent of enrolled students are women.

University of California-Berkeley

Unlike MIT and Stanford University, the University of California-Berkeley is a public school. The College of Engineering has seven departments and offers degrees in industrial engineering, operations research and environmental engineering. The college has 40 research centers and institutes for students to use. A perk of the program is that students enrolled in the College of Engineering have the option of taking an accelerated course, enabling them to graduate in just one year instead of two years. Graduate students also have the option of living on campus.
