How to Design Your Own House Plans

Designing your own house plans is a good way to be sure you are getting exactly what you want for your home. You can take as long as you need to design them. You can research as many houses and books as you would like to find elements that you want to incorporate into your design.

  1. Know your needs for your home. Decide how many bedrooms you need and how many bathrooms would you like. Decide whether you want an oversized living room or kitchen. Would you like to have a home office or game room? Once you figure out the number of rooms and the type of rooms, you are ready to figure out how you want to lay them out in the home.

  2. Look at as many houses as you can, both inside and outside. This will give you ideas for what you like and would want to incorporate into your plans.

  3. Visit the library for home design books that you can read. These will help give you an idea on what you have to think about that you may have overlooked. You can also buy home design magazines to look at, as well. The more reading and research you do, the more ideas and knowledge you will have.

  4. Buy home design software. This will make it much easier than using a pencil and paper to draw out your plans. Though, of course, you can still do that. It will just take more time and be more work for you. You will have to figure out scale. For example one square on paper could represent 3 feet. You will also have to draw in appliances and any fixtures you want to use. With the software, you will be able to use templates to get an idea on how it will look with appliances, fixtures and software in the rooms.

  5. Take your plans to an architect, to draw up the blueprint. The architect can catch any potential issues with your design and can advise you with helpful hints.
