Storage Solutions for a Closet Under the Stairs

This wasted space under the stairs is most often located in the center of the home. This space can be designed to store a variety of items that may be used frequently. If the space is near the front entrance, it would make an ideal coat closet for guest or daily use for family members.

Coat Closet

  • By attaching a clothes rod to the interior wall under the stairs, this area can be used to hang winter coats, sweaters and rain jackets.

  • Shelves can be added along the floor of the area which can be used to store snow boots and children’s galoshes.

  • Utility hooks can be attached to one of the walls to hang umbrellas and a variety of hats and ball caps.

  • A small dresser could be added to store gloves, scarves and toboggans.

Linen Closet

  • A linen closet can be easily created by adding tier-type shelves in a variety of widths.

  • Some of the shelves can store blankets, sheets and comforters.

  • Smaller shelves can also be added for storing towels and pillow cases.

Cleaning Supplies Closet

  • Hanging utility racks on the interior wall of the area will create the perfect place to hang brooms, mops and feather dusters out of sight.

  • This section would also be beneficial to keep a vacuum, steam cleaner and carpet shampooer.

  • Shelves can be added to store cleaning products, paper towels and trash bags.

Food Pantry and Kitchen Storage

  • Arrange shelves along the interior walls of the area for storing canned goods, boxed cereal or anything that may be purchased in bulk.

  • A bookcase can be added to store cookbooks that may be taking up space in the kitchen.

  • Large shelves can be added to hold electric roasters, crock pots and large pans that may not be used extremely often.
