Requirements for Pest Control Certification

In order to become a certified pest control technician there are certain requirements you must meet. While each state may have varying specific requirements, there are a few basic requirements for education and experience which all states will require you to meet.

For many states, the minimum education requirement is to possess a high school diploma or its equivalent. Depending on your state of residence, it may be possible for you to begin working as an apprentice. This enables you to begin gaining the on the job training required to become a pest control technician. The training you receive as an apprentice is typically a combination of work experience and classroom study in each area of pest control. These areas commonly include: rodent control, general pest control, termite, turf control and fumigation. Additionally, the apprentice technician is required to have training in the proper use of pesticides and safety.

After you have received the proper training and gained the required amount of work experience and training you must pass your state's examination. In addition to passing the state examination you will also need to pass a background check.

In addition to the proper education and training, there are a few other requirements you may need to meet to begin working in pest control. One such requirement is to be in good health. This is because you must be able to meet the physical demands the work requires such as working in extreme weather conditions and working in small spaces. These small spaces include small crawlspaces and attics. Should you be working for a pest control firm and not for yourself, you may also be required to possess a good driving record.
