How to Repair Auto Glass

A crack in your windshield does not have to dampen your day. Within thirty minutes, you can repair the crack yourself without ever having to visit an auto glass repair shop. All you need is a windshield repair kit and a little time out of your busy day.

  1. Purchase a windshield repair kit with suction cups. These can be found in most car parts stores.

  2. Remove any loose glass pieces, if any, from the crack. It might be wise use to a razor blade as the pieces may be hard to pick out.

  3. Damp a corner of a clean cloth and clean the crack as well as the area around it. Using the dry side of cloth, dry the area. You want to make sure the area is completely dry before moving on.

  4. Place suction cups around the crack. You want them to center around the crack. Place the tube in the center of the suction cups as tightly as you can make it.

  5. Pour the repair material carefully in the tube.

  6. Place the plunge in the tube and push down. Due to the pressure, the repair material will cause it to spread and begin to fill the crack.

  7. Hold in place for a minute and possible a bit longer to be sure the repair material fills the crack completely. You may remove the suction cups and tube once you are sure this is done.

  8. Use the film included in the kit to place over the crack. Flatten the film so that excess material can fill portions of the crack that aren’t already filled.

  9. Wait for the materials to dry, which should take about fifteen minutes. Once it is dry, remove the film and any excess material on the windshield.
