How to Open an Auto Repair Shop

Opening an auto repair shop can be a very profitable business venture for people who have strong automobile technical skills and the motivation to succeed in a competitive industry.  To start an auto repair business, you’ll need a comprehensive business plan, a good location and an effective advertising strategy.


 


  1. Research your competition.  As a small business owner, you need to learn how you can stand apart from your competitors in order to succeed in the long run.  If there is a big auto repair shop in your town already, consider looking for space in other locations.  Figure out which products and services you can offer that your competitors don’t.  Your business must be unique to attract new clients.

  2. Create a business plan and a budget.  After you decide what types of products and services you will offer at your auto repair shop, you need to create a solid business plan and a sensible budget.  If you are not an experienced business owner, you might have to face a lot of unforeseen expenses when you first open your auto repair shop.  Start small and grow your business slowly. 

  3. Choose a location for your shop.  If you are on a budget, look for existing auto repair shops you can buy because they already have all the equipment you’ll need.  You can also look into buying an auto repair franchise.  Franchises already have a built-in clientele, so you can save a lot of money on advertising.  Pick a location that is visible from the road.  The most profitable auto repair shops are typically located along highways and interstates.

  4. Get a business license and inquire about any other legal requirements you might have to fulfill before opening up your auto repair shop.  Various states have different laws and regulations.  Call your local government or the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for more information on legal requirements associated with opening an auto repair shop in your state.

  5. Actively promote your business.  Hand out flyers and offer discounts to new clients.  Hang up big signs advertising specials that drivers can see from the road.  Create a well-designed, organized website that lists the products and services you offer, repair rates and reasons why your business is superior to other auto repair shops in the area.
