Repairing Central A/C
Understanding some of the basic repair concepts for your central A/C unit can help tremendously if it goes out. During the summer months you want to be able to repair your air conditioner quickly if it starts to act up.
There are many things that can go wrong with central A/C. Something as simple as a filter can reduce performance. There are basic troubleshooting techniques you can use to determine what the problem is. Many issues can easily be corrected without a professional.
Replacing Filters
Your central A/C will need new filters on a regular basis. Most people already know to check the filters in the house on the air intake, but many air conditioning units also have filters on the outdoor unit itself. Indoor filters should be changed every 30-90 days to keep the performance in top shape. Filters on the unit outside need to be checked at least twice a season. This is to keep the air flowing and the dust, dander and debris from getting into your air. If your filter gets to be too dirty, then your A/C may stop working all together. The most common sign of a bad or clogged filter is very little air flow through the vents. In severe cases you may hear a hissing sound coming from the intake vent. This is an easy fix. Make sure the air conditioner is off if you are replacing the outdoor filter. You will simply need a screwdriver to get to the filter. Filters are inexpensive and very easy to replace. Keep up with them and check your central A/C’s filter regularly to prevent any issues.
Changing Fuses
If your unit does not seem to be getting any power, then it is possible that your fuse simply needs to be changed. Most central A/C units are on their own breaker because of the amount of power they use. Be sure to turn off your thermostat and your circuit breaker before doing anything else. Replace the fuse or breaker as specified by the breaker manufacturer.
Hiring a Professional
A professional will have to be called for service if you find or suspect something wrong with the wiring of your central A/C. If it needs to be recharged with coolant or there is an issue with the compressor a professional service person should also be contacted.
