How to Find a Private Tutor
You should not have to feel anxious or full of despair due to falling behind or struggling in a class. Essentially academic coaches, or private tutors, can assist you with your schooling outside of the traditional classroom. You can easily find a tutor, depending on the subject you need help with.
- Search online for private tutors by inputting “private tutors” into the search bar. A host of tutors and tutoring services will result. Sift through the results, reviewing services offered and fees associated with such assistance. Narrow down your choices, selecting only those businesses offering tutoring in the topic area you need help with. As always, before deciding on a local or national tutoring company, read testimonials and reviews.
- Seek out local private tutors through networking and contacts. Ask your friends and family if they have ever utilized a private tutor, and if so, ask for any recommendations they may have. Contact your local public schools and post-secondary institution(s) and ask for a list of private tutors.
- Look in your newspaper’s classified section. Many tutors offer their services through local newspapers. Often, the teacher will advertise his or her services along with a phone number and/or a website that potential clients can refer to. Using the phone number, call and speak with the potential tutor to schedule a time that you can meet.
- Discuss costs, missed appointment policy and tutoring service requirements, such as reasonable expectations and additional outside work. Request and check references. Review his or her educational qualifications. If the tutor-to-be does not meet your needs, continue on with your search. Note: The tutor may also decline you as a pupil if he or she feels that they cannot fulfill your needs and academic expectations.
