How to Fix a Sink Aerator

If the water is coming out with weekend pressure in your faucet you probably need to fix the aerator. The aerator is located at the tip of the faucet spout. A clogged up aerator can cause a faucet water to be uneven or shot out in all direction, or just trickling out. To fix a sink aerator most times it just needs a good cleaning.

Things you need:

  • Pliers or wrench

  • Old toothbrush

  • Vinegar

  • Baking soda

  • Push pin

  1. Use a sink stopper or towel to cover up the open drain. This will prevent any small parts from dropping down the drain.

  2. Unscrew the aerator from the faucet. Use either pliers or a wrench if needed. Remove the parts from inside the aerator by tapping it with your hand. Lay the pieces on the counter next to the sink. Make sure to keep them in the order from which they were removed.

  3. Rinse out the aerator from all the excess debris and rust. Soak the aerator screen and disks in pure distilled white vinegar. Place the screen and disks into two separate containers to soak them. Let them soak for a minimum of an hour.

  4. Sprinkle both baking soda and vinegar over the aerator screen. Scrub the screen with an old toothbrush until the baking soda and vinegar fizzes. Do this process to the additional pieces from the aerator.

  5. Poke any remaining deposits out of the screen with a pushpin. Reassemble the aerator in the same order it was disassembled.

  6. Remove the stopper or towel from covering the drain. Run the faucet at full force for a couple of minuets to flush out the faucet area. Turn the water off when done.

  7. Install the aerator back onto the faucet and screw it using a wrench or pliers if needed.  Make sure the aerator is tight and secure. Turn on your faucet and enjoy your new fixed aerator.
