How to Get a Contractors License

Working as a contractor has a lot of perks and benefits. However, you have to go through the process of getting your contractor’s license before you can start work.  There are certain guidelines you must meet but they will vary by the state you reside in. 


 


  1. Research the different kinds of contractor’s licenses in your state. You may have to meet certain requirements before you can even apply for a license in this area. Check into the type of schooling and the amount of work hours you need to apply as an independent contractor.

  2. Check with your local authority that handles the area of licensing contractors. The people that are certified to give you a license may vary by state. However, most states have specific offices that handle the processing of paperwork. You need to check with them to verify the taking of your contractor’s exam.

  3. Study for the contractor’s exam. Depending on the area, you live in you need to be prepared for your exam. The exam may cover anything from the laws of contracting to the legal practices of a contractor. You may be able to pick up study material or take practice exams online.

  4. Gather all documentation to apply for your license. You need proof of identification, proof of education, and the results of your contractor test to begin applying for your state license. Your application will be submitted to the state department that handles such applications.

  5. Return and complete and other paperwork. If your application for a contractor license cannot be approved, they may ask you to complete a few more steps.
