Tips for Automatic Transmission Repair

About Automatic Transmission Repair

The automatic transmission is the device that is connected to the back of the engine that sends the power from the engine to drive the wheels of the vehicle. Some repairs will require a simple adjustment, while other repairs will require replacing or the overhaul of the automatic transmission.

Adjustments

Older model automatic transmissions have bands that can be adjusted when the transmission is slipping.  In later model vehicles, the computer controlled automatic transmission can be adjusted when the computer is not sending the correct signals to the transmission due to a bad connection. Vehicles that are not computer controlled automatic transmission will require an adjustment to the throttle cable by using an adjustment screw.

Reseal Job

An automatic transmission can be resealed if there is an external leak.  If transmission fluid is leaking from the transmission, the mechanic can put the vehicle on a lift and reseal the transmission gaskets and seals.

Replace Accessible Parts

Many of the parts of the automatic transmission can be replaced without taking the transmission out of the vehicle. Other problems with the transmission may occur with the parts that are not accessible.

Complete Overhaul

During the overhaul of an automatic transmission, the transmission is removed from the vehicle.  All of the parts of the transmission are inspected for damage and cleaned or replaced with new parts.  The automatic transmission is then reassembled and placed back into the vehicle.

Replacement Unit

The automatic transmission is removed from the vehicle and replaced with another rebuilt or remanufactured automatic transmission.
