How to Find an Automatic Transmission Repair Shop

If a car owner is having transmission problems, taking the vehicle to a professional can get the car back on the road. Word of mouth is often the easiest way to find a reliable transmission repair shop. The best shop for the owner to use may depend on the year and model of the vehicle that is having transmission problems.

• Ask one of your friends to recommend an automatic transmission repair shop for your vehicle. Find out what type of car your friend took to the repair shop for transmission service. Write down the shop’s phone number, so you can set up a time to take your car in for service.  


• Look online to find transmission repair shops. Use a search engine to narrow down your choices to include only shops that are in your general area. Contact a shop to find out if they service your particular vehicle before you take the car in.


• Check the phone book to get a list of repair shops in your city. Look at the various advertisements to see which services have been in business the longest. Find out when you can take your car in for transmission service, so you can decide whether to use the shop or to keep checking.


• Call a car dealer in your area to ask where to take your vehicle for transmission work. The dealer will probably only service models that they sell, so only call a dealer that carries the type of car that you drive. If you cannot find a good repair shop, take the car into the dealer for service instead.


• Contact a local auto mechanic to find out if the shop does transmission work. You may be able to use a general auto mechanic if your car is not an exotic model that requires special training. Take your car to the mechanic’s shop and see if you can have the transmission service work done there.
