How to Make an Iguana Nice

How to Care for a Green Iguana

Green iguanas are one of the most popular reptile pets. You can find them at pet stores nearly everywhere. With the proper care, they make great companions. Green iguanas require a specific type of diet and plenty of positive social interaction.

  • House your iguana in a very large aquarium. Baby iguanas can start their lives in a 25-gallon tank. However, iguanas can grow as large as 7 feet in length. When an iguana matures, it will need to be kept in a cage that is as at least ten feet wide.

  • Place a 50 watt bulb about half a foot from the iguanas home and keep it on for about 12 hours each day. Iguanas require a lot of light. You can place the light on a timer if needed.

  • Put a heating pad beneath the iguanas cage to keep its environment at the proper temperature. The iguanas home should stay somewhere between 92 and 97 degrees fahrenheit. Measure the habitat temperature using a thermometer.

  • Maintain the humidity in the iguanas environment around 100%. Iguanas take in most of their water through their skin from the air. You can purchase a humidity indicator to monitor the environment. Be advised: These devices are expensive.

  • Buy plenty of vegetables with dark green leaves for the iguana to eat. These green vegetables provide the iguana with the high concentration of calcium it needs. Collard and mustard greens make great iguana food choices. Watch out for greens that contain too much phosphorous.
