How to Design Modern Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinets in a kitchen have to be upgraded every few years to keep a kitchen up-to-date. Modern cabinets are called "hybrid cabinets" because they include contrasting styles or colors used together. The cabinet you use should complement the architecture of the home.

Supplies:

  • Cabinet photos

  • Hardware choices

  • Design books

  • Home-remodeling magazines

  • Selection of appliance choices

  1. Create a sketch of the kitchen space to include openings for windows and doorways. Use some graph paper to make a floor layout, as well as a layout for the wall area. Let one square of graph paper represent four inches of real space. Begin with the kitchen sink area to design cabinets to hold dishes.

  2. Pick cabinet designs in two colors or two finishes of stain that complement one another for a hybrid effect. Look at home design books and magazines to get some ideas.

  3. Think about planning cabinets around appliances. Space the dishwasher, stove and refrigerator in a close pattern. Pick three cabinets to the left of the kitchen sink and three cabinets to the right on the upper wall. Select wider cabinets because narrow ones are harder to use when adding or taking out items.

  4. Use some colored pencils to figure color into the design. The way everything in the kitchen blends color will play a big role in how modern the kitchen looks. If you want a high tech look, use elongated stainless steel drawer pulls and cabinet door handles with stainless steel.

  5. Design the cabinets to go to the ceiling. Use granite or sleek tile work for the countertops as well as modern faucets for the sink.
