How to Clean Mold Off a Roof
Mold and mildew can cause serious problems if left to grow on your roof. Eventually the mold can eat through the shingles and begin working on the structures underneath. Your best defense against mold on your roof is to clean it as quickly as possible after you discover it.
Things You'll Need:
- Plastic tarps
- Garden hose
- Bleach
- Spray bottle
- Push broom
- Cover the plants near your house with plastic tarps. This helps protect them while you clean the roof. Also, use your garden hose to wet the grass around the plants and near the house.
- Mix one part bleach to two parts water and add the mixture to a spray bottle.
- Spray the bleach solution liberally on the affected parts of the roof. Let the bleach sit on the mold for at least 10 minutes. If large areas of the roof are moldy, clean smaller areas at a time.
- Scrub the moldy area with the push broom to loosen the mold. The push broom should not harm your shingles and the longer handle gives you some reach so you may not have to climb onto the roof itself.
- Rinse the roof thoroughly with fresh water and check to see if the mold is still present.
- Spray the bleach solution onto the moldy areas of the roof again and allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes.
- Scrub the roof again with the push broom.
- Rinse the entire roof and gutter area thoroughly when you are finished. Also, rinse the plants and grass underneath.
