How to Install Radon Mitigation System
If you live in a home that has high levels of radon then you need to take action immediately. One option is to install a radon mitigation system. This system will send the radon in your house to the outside.
- Drill a hole in the ground. Drill a hole in your basement floor, making it big enough to fit a 4 inch PVC pipe. Position the PVC pipe on the ground and trace a circle around its opening. Use a power drill to drill out the opening.
- Remove dirt from inside the hole. In the soil beneath your hole, dig out a pit about 20 inches in diameter. The purpose of this is so that any radon gas in the soil would move into the PVC pipe, through your house and out by way of the attic.
- Attach the first pipe into the hole. Route the pipe up through the floor and into the attic. If you want to keep it concealed, then you can run the pipe through a closet or garage.
- Seal the surrounding space. Close off the space around the PVC pipe in your basement floor. Attach a piece of backer rod just below the surface of the hole, and use cement to tightly seal the hole.
- Connect a fan to the pipe in the attic. Direct the rest of the pipe from the fan to the top of the attic. The pipe needs to extend at least a full foot above the roof.
