How to Waterproof Water Based Paint

Waterproofing your paint can prove to be a positive thing for your painted item. The waterproof additive used during the process can help keep your painted area looking fresher long. It can also help to prevent the build of water, which causes mold and mildew.

Items Needed:

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Water based paint

  • 5-gallon bucket

  • Stick or paint stirrer

  • Waterproof additive

  • Paint brush

  • Spray water bottle

  1. Clean the item or area you are painting. This should be sanded, smoothed and free of debris.

  2. Prepare the paint. Mix the water based paint with the waterproof paint additive. This should be done with a ratio of one to four, so in a 5-gallon bucket you should have four gallons of paint to one gallon of the waterproofing additive. Please note to never mix this additive with oil based paint because it will negatively affect the texture of the paint.

  3.  Mix the paint thoroughly with the additive. Use a stick or paint stirrer to stir the mixture for at least five minutes. This should be done with a vigorous force, but be careful not to spill it.

  4. Paint your item. Apply the paint as you normal would, and allow this to dry.

  5. Test your item. Spray water on a small and unseen area of the painted area. Let it sit for a while. It should puddle up and be easy to wipe away. The additive you placed in your paint will help prevent moisture build up, mildew and mold.
