Mold Problems in Aluminum Overhangs
Aluminum overhangs can often collect leaves and other debris over time. This material is a prime breeding ground for mold, which can damage the aluminum if not removed. It is important that mold is removed from metal overhangs right away to prevent damage from occurring.
- Mold in nature is designed to break down organic matter and help with the decomposition process. However, when this fungus grows on the aluminum overhangs, it will eat away at the protective coating of the aluminum causing rust and corrosion if not treated and removed right away.
- Treat the affected overhangs right away to both kill the mold and disinfect the surface to prevent the mold from reoccurring. Mix a cleaning solution that is equal parts of bleach and water in a standard household spray bottle, and then spray down the overhangs that have formed mold. Allow the bleach to sit for around 5 minutes, and then wipe the mold away with a wet rag or towel.
- There are sealants on the market that you can use that will protect your aluminum overhangs from developing mold by making them resistant to this fungus. Purchase a mold-resistant sealant at the local home improvement store in your area to protect your aluminum overhangs from future mold growth. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions for application and use.
- Moisture and debris are the primary reason that mold occurs on aluminum overhangs. You can help to prevent this from occurring by trimming back any trees that hang above the aluminum overhangs. This will help prevent the leaves and moisture from collecting on the surface leading to the growth of mold.
