How to Cover Wall Tiles

Removing wall tiles is a time consuming task, which could result in severe damage of your existing wall. To avoid this possible damage consider covering these wall tiles with other materials in order to create a fresh new look. Depending on your preference you could find a inexpensive remedy to this problem.

  • Primer

  • Paint brushes

  • Fine grit sandpaper

  • Cleansing cloth

  • Your selection of wall covering

  1. Sand the surface of the wall tile gently to dull the glaze covering using a fine grit sandpaper. Clean the tiles thoroughly with a clean dry cloth.

  2. Apply the primer over the existing wall tile. Repeat this step until all wall tiles are completely covered with the primer. Allow the primer to dry for at least 24 hours.

  3. Select a new wall covering. Unless you are installing sheetrock over the wall tiles you should select paint or metal wall tiles. Both of these options will cover the wall tiles without damaging your wall. Purchase your selection at your local home improvement store.

  4. Paint the wall tiles evenly and apply more than one coat if you chose to use paint to cover your wall tile. After the paint dries for at least 24 hours you should then add at least two coatings of polyurethane to your wall tiles to seal the paint onto the wall tile. Allow the polyurethane to drive for at least 24 hours. If you chose the metal wall tiles to cover your wall tiles install them according to the manufacturer's included instructions to ensure proper installation.
