How to Get a CNA Degree
Working as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) fulfills a great need in society. To get a CNA degree, obtain a high school diploma or GED, and enroll in a CNA certification program. After completing required coursework and passing an exam, you may enter the workforce as a CNA.
- Complete a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Certified nursing assistant programs require it. If you don't have a diploma, enroll in a GED program that prepares you for passing the GED exam.
- Enroll in a CNA program. Programs are offered by colleges, educational opportunity centers and medical facilities. Courses may require attendance for several months or a full semester. Accelerated programs also exist, requiring several weeks of full-time attendance.
- Master the course work. CNA certification requires knowledge of fundamental nursing skills, infection control, anatomy and nutrition. Informational courses are accompanied by hands-on experience to prepare you for the workforce.
- Ask your instructors about the certification exam. Requirements vary by state, and your program may offer the exam at the end of the course. Typically, the CNA exam consists of a clinical and written portion. Review program materials prior to the exam. Ask teachers to highlight the most important aspects of the information so that you are studying the exam content.
- Take practice tests. The value of practice tests is twofold. First, practicing allows you to identify which content areas to review. Second, practice tests accustom you to taking tests, reducing any anxiety you might experience during the examination process.
