How to Give Medicine to a Baby

How to Get Your Child to Take Medicine

Every parent has been through trying to give your child yucky tasting medicine. Though the pharmacist tries hard to give them flavored medicine that tastes good it very rarely ever works. They are sick and taking medicine is the last thing a child wants to do. There are some creative ways to succeed at your task however.

  • Choose a flavor. Get a certain flavored medicine from your pharmacist that your child likes then get some gelatin that is in the same flavor. Freeze the medicine and the gelatin in ice cubes. Your child will certainly ask for more so make sure to put the remainder in another ice cube tray. Also, make sure to mark the medicine ice cubes so that no one else in the family gets them.

  • Add the medicine to a drink. Fruit juices work best to hide the taste. Do not put the medicine in milk as not only will the child be able to taste it there are some medications that are not to be taken with dairy products.

  • Crush pills. If your child refuses to take even the chewable pills, crush them and add them to food. The more taste the food has the less likely that your child will notice the powdery taste of the pills.

  • Search the shelves at the drug store. Many companies conceal its medicines in lollipops and gummy bears to trick children into taking their medicine. Talk to your pharmacist about the ones that are most effective.

  • Make it into a game. If your child has no problem with the taste of the medicine but doesn’t want to take that first swallow make it into something fun. Tell your child that the medicine has “magical or super powers” that will make the illness go away.
