How to Evaluate Online Education Bachelor Degrees

Going back to school for a bachelor’s degree can be easier if you don’t need to attend a campus.  Before deciding on an online bachelor degree program, consider how much it costs and how much time it will take to complete the degree.  Make sure the college is reputable and offers a program that can fulfill your career goals.

  • Check that the college has been accredited. Accreditation means that the university has attained a standard of quality that other organizations will honor.  You may also wish to check whether a specific online bachelor degree program is accredited by a professional organization before pursuing it.

  • Check the ranking of your particular school to gauge its reputation.  Visit the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU.org).  Make sure you can find your prospective college or university on that list before enrolling.

  • Compare colleges based on their course and degree offerings.  Make sure that the college offers a degree that will be useful for you in your chosen career.

  • Make sure that the online college has a proven record of placing graduates in jobs. Ask for data on job placement from the career services center of the university or college.

  • Contact the college's student aid office to see what financial assistance is available for you. Although tuition for many online colleges is high, most students get financial assistance from the schools themselves. This is in addition to scholarships and any federal student aid that a student may be receiving.

  • Find out about any additional costs associated with obtaining a distance learning degree from a college.  Since distance education is a separate department at most universities and colleges, it will have a separate fee structure. Make sure you understand the full price of participating in a college’s distance degree program.

  • Compare the hardware requirements between different colleges offering online education bachelor degrees.  Certain colleges will require more up-to-date computer hardware than others. This is especially true for multimedia and computer degree programs.  Some colleges have specialized software that will only work on particular computer systems, so factor that into the price of your education should you wish to attend such a college.
