How to Price Consulting Services

How to Obtain a Consulting Services Contract

To obtain a job contract, a consultant must be willing to negotiate the price with the company that is interested in hiring the service. Many companies seek out bids from multiple consulting firms to decide which one to hire. The consultant will need to determine how much to charge in order to make an accurate bid for the services contract.

  1. Review the services contract to decide how much to bid. Some of the things you need to figure out are the cost of your time, the materials you need to buy and how many other jobs you may need to postpone. Try to find out if other consulting firms are in the running for the contract to help you determine the right price to ask.

  2. Discuss the services contract with the owner of the company that is offering it. Find out what the owner expects you to do to fulfill the contract. Address any concerns that you have to see how the owner reacts. You may want to pass if the owner appears to be difficult to work with.

  3. Ask the owner to give you a deadline to see if you can complete the job on time. Decide if you need to hire some outside help in order to complete the job. The added cost will eat into your profit margin so you should take that into account before you bid on the contract.

  4. Prepare a written bid for the services contract and give it to the owner. Wait to hear back to see if the owner accepts your price. If the owner makes you a counteroffer, you will need to decide whether to accept it or to pass altogether.

  5. Sign the necessary paperwork if you and the owner agree on a price for the contract. Find out when you can start the job. Hire any additional help that you need so the job will go smoothly.
